Requirements for training courses

Obtaining a provisional LGV/HGV licence

To commerce a LGV/HGV course you will need a LGV/HGV licence. For this you must:

  • Be over 21 years of age  
  • Hold a valid car licence  
  • Be certified medically fit  

All the necessary arrangements including medical appointments, completion of application forms etc. to enable you to obtain your provisional LGV/HGV license can be handled by our administrative staff.

Obtaining a Provisional P.C.V licence

To commerce a P.C.V course you will need a P.C.V licence. For this you must:

  • Be over 18 years of age  
  • Hold a valid car licence  
  • Be certified medically fit  

All the necessary arrangements including medical appointments, completion of application forms etc. to enable you to obtain your provisional P.C.V license can be handled by our administrative staff.

Obtaining a Small Lorries licence

To commerce an Small Lorries course you must:

  • Be over 18 years of age  
  • Hold a full car licence  
  • Be certified medically fit  

Car drivers who pass their test after 01/01/97 will no longer be entitled to drive medium sized lorry/van. Instead they will have to take the new medium sized lorry test C1 and meet the higher medical standards. The same as the present L.G.V test.

The Theory Test

This is not a written test, the theory test is multiple choice on a touch screen computer. It consist of 100 questions and you have to get 85 correct. You will have 2hrs to complete this test.

The Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception test is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You will be presented with a series of 19 video clips which feature every day road scenes, in each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. This test takes 30 minutes to complete.

The theory test and hazard perction test are two seperate test. You can take the test either on the same day or on seperate days. Both test must be passed before you can take your practial driving test. If you fail one and pass one you only have to take the test you failed again.

Case Studies

The case studies only need to be taken by new drivers who wish to drive buses or mini buses. The test will need to be taken by new drivers who wish to drive lorries from 10 sept 2009.
  The case studies are scenarios or a set of circumstances that you may encounter in your working life as a professional driver. You will have 7 different case studies each with between six and eight questions. You will be asked 50 questions in total and have 90 minutes to complete the test. There are five types of case studies you may be asked 1.multiple choice- choosing one answer from a number of questions 2. multi-response- selecting more than one choice from a number of questions 3. Hot spot- Using the mouse, clicking on an appropriate area of an illustration. 4. Audio- Listening to an audio clip, then choosing one answer from a number of options. 5. Short text- you may also be asked to provide a short text answer by using the keyboard. This will be in a numerical format for ease of response. You will be given you results within 10 minutes of completion.

The Course

All the courses offered by this Lgv/hgv centre are tailored to suit the individual. The courses are conducted on a one to one basis with our experienced instructors. The courses are run over 4 half days, with the test on the 5th day. The courses are done in either morning or afternoon sessions, whichever suits your needs.

The Assessment

Having obtained a provisional licence your driving skills will have to be assessed. This will be carried out by an experienced instructor who will supervise while you drive one of our vehicles for approximately one hour on both public roads and our private manoeuvrng areas. Once the assessment is completed we can then estimate how much tuition you require to take you to the test standard. We will also discuss various methods of tuition open to you.

The Test

As one of the UK's largest driver organisations we process 100 test per month and thus we are able to offer options on dates and venues for test. All the relevant paperwork and liaison with the test centre will be handled by our experienced administrative staff, leaving you free to concentrate on the practical aspects of your course. The test will be an approved dsa test centre, with qualifed dsa examiners. You will be asked to do a reversing exercise and a braking exercise before you go out on the road.Out on the road the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. The drive on the road last about 60 minutes and the overall test takes about 90 minutes.
